FAQ

Over the years we've had many questions and comments about the course. Here are some of the most common questions people have, together with a few others. Please use our support page to contact us if your question's not answered here.

Before buying the course

  • I'm a complete beginner; is the course really suitable for me?

Yes, most definitely. We don't know of a simpler, more relaxed way to 'pick up' the language. (And hear some great music and stories too!)

  • I'm already doing/have done some Welsh before. Is the course ok for me?

The course doesn't follow the traditional reasoning of 'spoon-feeding' language to you, so you won't feel that you're spending ages covering old ground. It's also almost certainly completely different to anything you're already doing in Welsh classes, and probably won't seem too much like work. That means it works great as a 'booster' to an evening class/day course etc.

  • Can I use the course as a 'refresher' or in addition to another course/Welsh class?

Yes you can. See the above answer.

  • Isn't Welsh a 'difficult' language?

You can choose to make anything difficult or easy if you like. We chose to make learning Welsh easy when we wrote Cadw Swn. We give you the tools to do the job in an easy, convenient way.

  • What does the course cover?

Pretty much every tense that you'll need to speak Welsh, plus a huge amount of vocabulary. Past, present, future and conditional are all in the course. While there are often other tenses, or other variants of these tenses, we feel that the course gives you a great grounding in Welsh.

  • I tried learning Welsh in an evening class/using another course before. It didn't work for me then, why should I think that Cadw Swn will be any different?

It's funny how people look differently at learning different things. Personally, I think I found learning to drive one of the most difficult things to get to grips with. However, even when I failed I didn't think of giving up - the norm is that once you start leaning to drive you'll eventually succeed. I did have to change the way I learnt to drive though; I took lessons instead of relying solely on my father.

  • Can I use the course anywhere?

Nearly anywhere, but please don't use the course while driving, operating machinery etc. The course contains relaxation tracks, and you won't be in the right state of mind to follow it.

  • I've heard that the course teaches 'South Wales Welsh' but I live in North Wales. Do you do a 'North Wales Welsh' version?

Unfortunately not. Producing a course such as Cadw Swn is a huge venture, and we can't currently justify the cost of rewriting and re-recording the entire course.

  • Isn't the course expensive?

We actually did some thinking about this recently. Cadw Swn contains 20 lessons, which could each take anywhere between 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. That's ignoring any time you might choose for revision. (Colin allows 2 hours for each lesson when he's teaching them.) So we calculated that the course is equivalent to 30-40 hours of tuition by an experienced tutor, for which you could pay ten times what we're charging or more!

Since  the course also gives you the chance to go over anything whenever you choose, we should probably be charging a lot more for it. Buy now before we come to our senses!

  • Do you ship to...

Almost certainly yes. Anywhere that the Royal Mail will let us.

  • How long will the course take to arrive?

We usually ship UK courses by first class post. International orders are shipped by airmail, which in most countries usually takes around a week to arrive. We try to ship out courses within 24 hours of the order being placed (weekdays).

  • What if I'm out when it gets here?

Because we use Royal Mail, who also deliver on Saturdays, its usually just a matter of calling in at your local post office.

  • What does 'Cadw Swn' mean?

'Cadw' means to keep or maintain, 'swn' is a sound or noise. 'Cadw Swn' means to make a noise.

  • Are there any subliminal messages in the course?

Absolutely not. The recordings are simply classical tracks with a spoken voice. There are no 'hidden messages', vocals recorded backwards, etc.
